Training For A 8k and 1/2 Marathon

I decide this year to start training for a 8k and then a 1/2 marathon.  I have never been much of a runner, but I figured this would be a good way to be in shape for hunting season.  So, off I have gone on the running trails around Redmond, OR.  I have great respect now for those who do marathons and triatholons. 

If anyone has any training tips let me know.  I have been reading a lot of info, and contacted the local running club to get some advice.  I just thought I could throw on a pair of shoes and be on my way.  Little did I know there is much more to it than that.  So, along with a good clean diet, I am learning all about proper stretching and strength training.  It is all very interesting. 

I think we may do the the Shamarock Run in Portland in March and then the Hippie Chick Run in May.  I hope I am race ready by then, because then I will be ready for August archery season.
