\"boyAlthough not native to Michigan, rainbow trout have become one of the state’s favorite sport fish. From the inland lakes and streams to the Great Lakes, rainbows provide countless hours of angling enjoyment to all manner of fishermen.<\/p>\n

Native to the Pacific watershed, rainbow trout came to Michigan when eggs were imported from California in 1876. First stocked in the Au Sable River, then four years later in the Lake Michigan watershed, rainbows can now be found in all corners of the state. Large specimens that inhabit the Great Lakes but travel inland to spawn in streams have come to be called steelhead.<\/p>\n

Like any trout, stream rainbows can be caught by a variety of techniques; live bait, artificial lures and flies all produce. In large lakes, rainbows can be caught by trolling or by fishing with bait or jigging through the ice in winter. Though most commonly associated with clear-water lakes in northern Michigan, rainbow trout have been successfully stocked into a number of southern Michigan lakes as well, where they provide a unique fishery. Fishing after dark at the thermocline — the depth at which there is a major change in temperature — with live bait, salmon eggs or corn is the principle technique.<\/p>\n

\"rainbowWhen many Great Lakes area anglers think about rainbows, however, they’re dreaming of steelhead, fish that are hatched (or stocked) in a river, migrate to out to the big water to mature, then return to their natal streams to reproduce. Although there is an open-water, off-shore fishery for steelhead in the summer in Lake Michigan, the bulk of anglers pursue them during their spawning runs, from the piers or in the streams. Steelhead begin filtering upstream in October and fishing for them continues through May, though between fish that have completed spawning (popularly called “drop-backs”) but have yet to migrate back out into the big lake and a few summer-run fish, there are almost always some steelhead in the streams.<\/p>\n

Anglers can catch steelhead with a wide variety of techniques. They are often taken on spawn, either loose eggs tied in bags or whole skein cut into chunks, fished on the bottom or below a bobber. But other fishermen enjoy casting for them with spinners and plugs and still others, fishing from boats, simply drop crankbaits downstream and allow them to work in the current. Fly fishermen using nymphs or egg patterns fish along the bottom, though swinging large streamers in the current is catching on in popularity.<\/p>\n

Michigan is one of the best steelhead fishing states in the country. Virtually all Great Lake tributaries attract some steelhead with some of the best-known fisheries at the Manistee, Pere Marquette and St. Joseph Rivers in the Lake Michigan watershed, the Au Sable River off of Lake Huron and the Huron River in the Lake Erie watershed.<\/p>\n

Summer Run Steelhead<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although steelhead fishing is most commonly associated with late fall, winter and spring, there are some summer-run migratory rainbow trout found in Michigan. Popularly\u00a0\"Skamania\"called “Skamania,” the name of the hatchery that developed the strain, summer-run steelhead can be found in just a couple of Michigan streams these days, though at one time they were stocked in a handful of Lower Peninsula waterways.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Natural Resources raised and stocked Skamania for about a decade until the late 1990s, then quit growing the summer-runs in favor of the more traditional Michigan strain, which not only produced better returns but were more popular with more anglers.<\/p>\n

In addition, genetic analysis of the summer-run fish showed little diversity. DNR fisheries managers decided it would be more beneficial to expand production of Michigan’s traditional strains than to experiment further with Skamania.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t want them to breed with our standing stock because of potential negative impacts,” explained DNRE fisheries researcher Jory Jonas.<\/p>\n

Michigan, however, continues to stock summer-run steelhead that are raised in Indiana hatcheries. And the Indiana DNR continues to stock significant numbers of steelhead in the St. Joseph River, upstream from Michigan waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winter Steelhead\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Aside from summer-runs, steelhead usually begin entering the streams in early fall, often right behind the Chinook salmon. By early winter, the bulk of the fish that are migrating before spring will have already arrived, unless a thaw increases the flow in the stream and induces another run.<\/p>\n

\"Photo<\/center>That’s one reason that winter steelhead fishing can be tough; the steelhead in the streams are “veterans,” having been fished over for weeks or even months.<\/p>\n

As a result, winter steelhead anglers often down-size their offerings. Smaller spawn bags or wax worms or wigglers fished under bobbers are popular baits for winter steelhead.<\/p>\n

As cold-blooded creatures, fish often become less active and feed less in the winter. Veteran winter steelhead anglers preach precise presentations – the fish are usually not willing to chase baits very far – in water with less current, where fish do not have to expend their energy fighting to stay in position. Holes and bottom depressions that create horizontal seams in the current are popular areas. So are eddies or areas behind obstructions (boulders, downed trees, etc.) that deflect the current.<\/p>\n

Winter steelhead fishing is more popular in larger rivers – the Manistee, Grand and St. Joseph rivers, for example – which are not as subject to freezing as smaller streams.<\/span><\/p>\n

With his background and experiences studying Ichthyology, Microbiology, and River Ecology it gives him a totally unique view on fishing. Justin is an active member of the City of Monroe Dam Remediation committee. He holds positions within sub-committees \u2013 Technical review and the Fishway committee with the CMDR.
