]]>Join in with a large group of fellow Pope and Young Club members for a January 2012, seven-day, semi-guided Coues’ deer hunt in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Sonora, Mexico (about 200 miles south of Douglas, Arizona). The hunt takes place during the rut. Includes carpooling from Douglas, ranch house lodging and meals. The group splits up and heads to separate ranches (each more than 30,000 acres of arid, rolling hills with thornbrush-covered mesas). Each ranch group will have a couple of assistants and a cook (three squares of original Sonoran recipes–mucho caliente!).
These ranches have seen very limited hunting in the past. The entire arrangement is part of a large jaguar restoration project being funded, in part, by the Pope and Young Club’s Conservation Program. This area has the northernmost breeding jaguar population in North America, and also has ocelot, kotamundis, mountain lion, coyotes, javelina and four breeds of quail.
Last year’s group of 25 bowhunters got 16 Coues’ deer bucks! The largest one score 118.
This terrific and unique opportunity was donated by Dirk Dieterich (719-440-7700) and Harv Ebers.

Register online, over the phone (507-867-4144), or by sending the registration fee of $100 to the Club’s headquarters. The registration fee covers green fees, prizes and a significant donation to the Pope and Young Club / St. Charles Museum of Bowhunting.

SPORTING CLAYS
A new addition to the convention activities line-up, a Sporting Clays Shoot gives you a chance to show off your shotgun shooting prowess…or to just dabble in something you’ve always wanted to try.
Thursday, April 7th
Noon – about 4pm
Participants will gather in the Mayo Civic Center North Lobby at noon for a short ride to the range. We’ll break into teams of five people and, with a shotgun start, will shoot 100 clays at nine (9) different stations.
Bring your own shotgun, or we can find one for you, and join in on a great afternoon of friendly competition. Shells will be available.
Register online, over the phone (507-867-4144), or by sending the registration fee of $50 to the Club’s headquarters. The registration fee covers shooting, prizes and a donation to the Pope and Young Club Trust Fund.
We’ve got a few chances for you to put a bow, or two, in your hands during the convention too! On Saturday, attendees have a chance to try out the Genesis bows used around the country in National Archery in the Schools Programs. An indoor 3-D course will have been set up the previous day, for an Invitational NASP 3-D Fun Shoot–for NASP-enrolled public schools in the region. Therefore, what a great chance for us all to try out the standard NASP equipment and fling some arrows!
Also, some arrow-flinging fun can be had during your visit(s) to the Pope and Young Club Museum during the Convention. The Minnesota Bowhunters will have an aerial frisbee thrower and ample bows and flu-flu arrows on hand for you to do a little “wing” shooting.
