{"id":2689,"date":"2010-06-19T04:57:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-19T04:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/2010\/06\/19\/spring-turkey-birthday-hunt\/"},"modified":"2010-06-19T04:57:00","modified_gmt":"2010-06-19T04:57:00","slug":"spring-turkey-birthday-hunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outdoorblog.net\/pnwbowhunting\/2010\/06\/19\/spring-turkey-birthday-hunt\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring Turkey Birthday Hunt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the generosity from some new friends, I was able to join them this past\u00a0spring for a special hunt with my oldest daughter, Abbey.\u00a0 It was my birthday present for her as she&#8217;s always asking to go hunting with me.\u00a0 She turned 8 in February.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/IMG_0435.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2998\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/IMG_0435-584x327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a word, it was<strong> fantastic<\/strong> and I can&#8217;t thank Matthews, Matt, and Cameron enough for a very memorable weekend for my daughter and me.<\/p>\n<p>We were on birds all three days but things just didn&#8217;t pan out until Matthews\u00a0made arrangements to get us on a new property for our final Sunday morning hunt. We were up early and exited the trucks to the repeated thundering of gobbling up on the ridge. These three guys repeatedly helped carry the yard-sale of stuff needed to facilitate an 8-year old.<\/p>\n<p>We had\u00a0my blind &amp; decoys up around 5:30 or so\u00a0and I soon joined in with the calling to hopefully pull the flock\u00a0out of the trees down our way. We were set-up a bit further than I&#8217;d have liked but it was getting light fast and I\u00a0didn&#8217;t want to push it too hard.<\/p>\n<p>Abbey was pretty into it but very tired so I pulled her boots off and tucked her into a sleeping bag where she rested for the better part of an hour, despite the onslaught of gobbling. \u00a0I kept an eye out and eventually we had a lone hen clucking\/purring around the blind, followed by four whitetail bucks sporting velvet nubs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2999\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/IMG_0458-584x327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/IMG_0475-584x327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pursuetheoutdoors.com\/field-journals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/holding-bird-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple more hours past and after a short exchange about &#8220;luck&#8221; (and our lack thereof) Abbey decided that she should put a tail feather she&#8217;d found out the opening of the blind to attract turkeys.\u00a0 About five minutes later\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;BOOM!&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 Cameron nailed his bird up on the hillside above us. I immediately started cutting and yelping to pull the scattering birds our way to regroup.\u00a0 Moments later I spotted a bunch of heads bobbing around in confusion so I let out a few soft clucks and purrs while pointing them out to Abbey. They started coming our way so I handed her the hearing protection muffs and whispered, <em>&#8220;Put these on \u2013 quick!&#8221;<\/em> I turned around to see them on a dead run into the decoys 8 yards out\u2026hen, hen, hen, jake, hen, jake, hen, <em>&#8220;BOOM!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was elated! Abbey was right there watching over my shoulder\u00a0as I squeezed\u00a0off the shot. \u00a0By the time Abbey and I were done hugging and celebrating, I could see Matthews running down the hill toward us, followed by Cameron with his bird over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>What a morning \u2013 my daughter later told me\u00a0it was the best weekend of her life.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t agree more!<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of great guys out there and I just want to say that Matthews, Matt, and Cameron are up near the top of that list. These guys went out of their way to help make this a special weekend for me and Abbey.
