Recently, the Michigan DNR sent letters out to all license retailers in the state outlining their plans for a new license terminal. It has been sometime since they have done any upgrading to their system. In fact, Michigan was the first state to offer an electronic license sales program which is now the basis for most other states’ systems.

The DNR says there are two reasons why this change is being made during trying economical times. One is that the systems behind the scenes; hardware and software are at their maximum limit in life. The manufacturer will no longer support those products beyond March 2013.The early phase of this change-over is going to lay the foundation for a better license sales system which will be evolved over the next 3 to 5 years. The changes are going to happen in waves of 200 retailers at time starting March of 2012.

What this means to you the outdoorsman? It means that you will be seeing new equipment beginning to show up at your local license retailers starting early next year. One thing that will effect you is that the retailer will be able to double-check your order and make changes easier and faster than what they can now. So for you guys getting that sportsman discount, no more screw ups. Also, your entire list of past purchases will be viewable so replacements and voids may done quicker.

With them spending this money, they are making it a point to use as many Michigan based companies as they can for this roll out. The retailer supplies and equipment swaps will be handled by an unnamed company based in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The training material for the retailers is also being created by a Lansing based Company. The DNR is also using the Michigan Based System development team from Hewlett Packard.
